Tragic Pedestrian Fatality on State Road 429: A Call for Increased Road Safety Awareness

In the early hours of a recent Sunday, a life was abruptly and tragically cut short on State Road 429 in Ocoee, just West of my Orlando office, a stark reminder of the ever-present dangers that pedestrians face on our roads. This incident, as reported by the Florida Highway Patrol, unfolded shortly before 2 a.m. near mile marker 24, just north of Plant Street.

As an Orlando personal injury lawyer, who focuses on serious injury and wrongful death lawsuits, I notice these kinds of news articles. But I wonder: do most people? Or do these just become part of the news to which many of us have long become numb? I have spoken with so many family members who have lost loved ones after Orlando car accidents, I really do take a moment, every time I hear another story, to think about the life that is gone. We really have to do better as a community, as far as taken accident prevention and precautions much more seriously.

An unidentified man, walking in a westerly direction on the outer, northbound lane of SR-429, was struck by a sedan. The impact was severe, and despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. In other words, he was just walking down the street near Orlando, and now he is dead! The driver of the sedan, a 19-year-old Orlando man, sustained minor injuries and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Florida Highway Patrol is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.
